First Phase of Collaboration
With the support of Long Beach City College Superintendent-President Dr. E. Jan Kehoe, the collaboration began with the School of Learning Resources, Teaching & Technologies.
Under the direction of the Dean of the School, Leticia T. Suarez, Ph.D., a collaboration of instructional technology areas were involved in helping the Scholar acquire the technology skills necessary to manage the project remotely from Sri Lanka. These areas will continue to support the Scholar while she is abroad.
The LBCC Fulbright Project as a whole contains two separate prongs: the instructional Web site and the informational web site called “Journey of a Fulbright Scholar.” The instructional, or Web enhanced site, hosted by the Instructional Technology Development Center, will serve as the bridge between the instructional efforts of LBCC and Kelaniya University. The informational site will be the project’s link to the college community and the outside world.
Team Field Support
The Instructional Technology Development Center Team includes Leslie Heber, Educational Technologist and Project Leader and C.C. Sadler, Educational Technologist / Multimedia Graphic Artist, both assisting with graphic design, web design, logistics and field support. Leslie, as the Project Leader, will be the Scholar’s main contact with LBCC, ensuring that both Web sites are in continuous and full operation. The Instructional Media Production Services area under the direction of Manager of Instructional Media Fred Rossmannek, is handling the video production, editing and conversion processes as well as still photography and internet research. Additional supporters were David Darjany, Educational Technologist (ITDC), and Noe Valladolid, Instructional Assistant (Learning & Academic Resources Department). Other members of the team are ITDC work experience students, working as Helpdesk Technologists, including Wendi Lopez, Chon Meng and Floyd Davis.
The collaboration among LBCC educators will take place on the Fulbright Instructional Site. This site was developed with the Instructional Technology Development Center team using LBCC's e-learning environment.
Designated Long Beach City College professors with their students will be collaborating with a special group of students from Sri Lanka to bridge the cultural gap. Each instructor will be posting questions in a Discussion Forum for their students to respond and Sri Lankan students to participate in the debate.
All participating students will be asked to answer a set of questions and post their answer in the Student Bios section.
In pioneering this educational endeavor, we are setting up a framework which can be continued into the future, and can become an ongoing part of various programs and courses at Long Beach City College and at Kelaniya University, and other universities in the near vicinity in Sri Lanka.
Initial participating professors are Karen Faulkner from International Business and Dennis Miller from English as a Second Language.
